Public IP addresses are globally unique and assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to ensure that no two devices on the internet have the same address. These addresses allow devices to communicate directly over the internet. Private IP addresses, on the other hand, are reserved for use within private networks, such as homes or businesses. They are not routable on the public internet and are typically assigned by a router using Network Address Translation (NAT).
