Routing Protocol Preparation Practice Exams
About this course
Routing Protocol is a set of rules and procedures that enable routers to communicate with one another and determine the best path for data packets to travel across a network. These protocols are crucial in ensuring that information is delivered efficiently and accurately, particularly in complex and large-scale environments such as enterprise networks or the internet. The main purpose of routing protocols is to discover available routes, share information about those routes, and maintain updated tables that reflect the changing conditions of the network.Types of Routing Protocols are generally classified into different categories based on their working mechanisms and the areas in which they are applied. The two broad categories are Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs), used within an autonomous system, and Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs), used between different autonomous systems. Each type has its advantages and is suited to specific scenarios, making it essential for network engineers to understand their distinctions and applications.Distance Vector Protocols operate by having routers share their routing tables with their neighbors periodically. Each router makes decisions based on the distance, usually measured in hops, to a destination network. Protocols like RIP (Routing Information Protocol) fall into this category. While easy to configure, distance vector protocols can be limited by scalability issues and the potential for slower convergence, particularly in large networks.Link State Protocols, on the other hand, provide a more comprehensive and efficient approach. Routers using these protocols build a complete map of the network by exchanging link-state advertisements with all other routers. OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) and IS-IS are common examples. These protocols tend to converge faster and scale better than distance vector protocols, making them suitable for large enterprise networks.Hybrid Routing Protocols combine features of both distance vector and link state proto
