The Art of Cooperation This course explores the fundamental "game of choice" between cooperation and defection in both biological and professional spheres. Drawing on historical, biological, and mathematical perspectives, students will examine why cooperation provided a reproductive advantage to primitive human bands and how social interactions among microbes—ranging from mutualism to "cheating"—still mirror modern human behaviour. Participants will engage with the mechanics of game theory through the Red-Blue game, a variation of the Prisoner's Dilemma, to learn that observed behaviour is often more reliable than verbal explanations. The curriculum focuses heavily on the winning strategy of Tit-for-Tat (TFT) and its many variants, teaching students how to be "nice but ruthless" and "instantly forgiving" to foster long-term stability. Key Topics Covered: The Anatomy of Defection: Analysing why individuals "play red," including self-protection, the pursuit of self-interest, and the impact of incomplete information or stereotypes.
